Seminars, German Course, Internship

Von: FB 03 - Studienbüro

Dear MIEPP Students,

I know that the time of exams is almost nigh, yet I have a super intensive newsletter for you (curtesy of missing last week) so bear with me.

In order to provide better clarity, here are the topics:

1.       Seminar Announcements

2.       German Course Changes

3.       Questionnaire on Cultural Traits

4.       Internship

Seminars

First and foremost, the moment you have all been waiting for, all been longing for, almost as much as for the semester to be over. The seminars are here. As always, I have attached a document with all of the relevant seminar information to this email.

Since the Seminar offered by Prof. Barbaro will have its first meeting on February 27, we have to hurry a bit this year. Thus, there will be a bit less time to think about what seminar you want, the registration period will have to be a bit shorter.

For those of you not familiar with the process (others can skip to the timeline below), the registration for seminars is not done via Jogustine but by email. In order to register for a seminar, please write an email to me (studienfachberatung-vwl AT uni-mainz.de) including your name, matriculation number, specialization and a ranking of all of the available seminars, including the instructors name, according to your preferences (highest preference 1, lowest preference 5). I will then place you into the seminars while keeping your preferences and specializations in mind as much as possible. If, due to your specialization, you have to take a seminar in a certain area (i.e. you are in international economics student and already have taken a public policy seminar), please also mention that in your email. In the same way, if you want to take two seminars, please include this information as well.

Now, some useful pointers: -          If you only rank one or two seminars, I will simply assume that all the other seminars are of equal utility to you below the ranked ones. It will in no way guarantee that you receive one of the seminars listed. -          If you want to write your master thesis at a chair, you can mention it in the email to me but it will also not guarantee you a spot in the seminar. -          This is not a first come, first serve procedure, I will look at all the preferences at the end of the time period and try to get everyone situated as well as possible. -          Simply because you have a certain specialization, does not mean that you have to take both seminars in this area. In fact, it is very likely that one of the two seminars is not in your specialization area.    Registration will start today, January 29th and end Monday, February 12th. This only give you two weeks (I know, very short time), yet I will try to remind you once again before the time runs out.

German course

Secondly, and almost as exciting as the seminar announcements, there will be changes to the German courses offered. We are constantly and tirelessly working behind the scenes to improve the MIEPP (even though it sometimes might not seem like it) and the German courses offered are another big incoming change.

Here are the details:

We are looking for a much closer cooperation between the ISSK and the MIEPP in the coming semesters. We would like to start with schedules that are free of any overlap up to hopefully (very tentative) introduction level German courses (A1/A2) only for MIEPP students.

Sadly, change sometimes takes time and most of you will probably not be able to benefit from these changes, but you can help make life so much easier for the MIEPP students coming behind you. In other words, I really need your help to make this happen.

In order to see what the demand for these courses might be, I would like to ask every international student, who went to the ISSK and took the German placement test in order to be placed into one of the German courses, to tell me which course he/she was placed into. It does not matter if that was last semester, a year ago or longer, I simply need to know your starting German level at this university. Do not worry; you do not have to give me any personal information. I have set up a google spreadsheet with a column of numbers on the left and the German levels on the top. What I would need of you is simple:

1.       Go to the spreadsheet: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/15yxid2_frcfMmkWfKxYQaRV8qhH4zNHp2UeVyBlgWCE/edit#gid=0

2.       Find the first free row (if you are the first one, it will be the one marked 1 and if you are the 18th, it will be number 18)

3.       Mark an X into the cell that corresponds to your German placement

4.       You’re done, feel good about yourself, you helped make the MIEPP better

If we find that there is a large enough demand for A1/A2 German courses from the MIEPP, we will look to have one of each of these courses open only to MIEPP students each semester. These courses can then not only be free of schedule overlap but also cater more closely to the needs of the MIEPP students and, of course, you can have a course just with your colleagues, which might improve the learning atmosphere.

Questionnaire on Cultural Traits

There is a former MIEPP student studying the influence of cultural differences on countries’ trade relationships. In her research project on understanding country-specific cultural traits, she is conducting a short anonymous survey, which takes only 10-15 minutes to complete. You can support her research here.

Internship

Last but not least, the company Helaba Invest, is looking for part time student workers. The details are also attached to this email, it was sent to me by a former MIEPP student so if you have any more questions feel free to contact him:

Trung Pham, Portfolio Manager Fixed Income Emerging Markets: trung.pham AT helaba-invest.de

Anyone how is still reading now (probably all two of you), you are awesome, thank you for sticking with me this long, have a nice week and thank you so much for your help.

Sincerely,

Christoph Wirp
