Seminars, Political Science Course and Exam Good Luck

Von: FB 03 - Studienbüro

Dear MIEPP Students,

Today I have an all-time favorite topic to talk to you about: Exams being over and done. Well that is only part of the story. The other part is what you do with your time once this dreamlike state of exams being passed is achieved. The best way to spend your time is, naturally, taking some more courses next semester and starting the madness all over again, so here I come in helping you with the seminars and political science course.

Seminars:

First of all, the seminars. I know that exams start next week and next semester seems far away but nonetheless life will go on, another semester will come and with it the possibility to take seminars.

For those of you not familiar with the process (others can skip to the timeline below), the registration for seminars is not done via Jogustine but by email (you also do not have to do anything in Jogustine after sending the email). In order to register for a seminar, please write an email to me (MIEPP AT uni-mainz.de) including your name, matriculation number, specialization and a ranking of all of the available seminars, including the instructors name, according to your preferences (highest preference 1, lowest preference 9). I will then place you into the seminars while keeping your preferences and specializations in mind as much as possible. If, due to your specialization, you have to take a seminar in a certain area (i.e. you are in international economics student and already have taken a public policy seminar), please also mention that in your email. In the same way, if you want to take two seminars, please include this information as well.

Now, some useful pointers:

-          If you only rank one or two seminars, I will simply assume that all the other seminars are of equal utility to you below the ranked ones. It will in no way guarantee that you receive one of the seminars listed.

-          If you want to write your master thesis at a chair, you can mention it in the email to me but it will also not guarantee you a spot in the seminar.

-          This is not a first come, first serve procedure, I will look at all the preferences at the end of the time period and try to get everyone situated as well as possible.

-          Simply because you have a certain specialization, does not mean that you have to take both seminars in this area. In fact, it is very likely that one of the two seminars is not in your specialization area.

Registration will start today, July 11 and end Sunday, August 4. This should give all of you enough time to tell me your preferences. As always, I have attached a document with all of the relevant seminar information to this email.

Political Science Course: Secondly, the course Policy Making in the European Union (a political science course that can be found in Jogustine) is open for MIEPP students. Yet there are only ten spots available for you guys, so you cannot sign up for the course on your own. If you want to take the course, please also send me a (separate) email by August 4 in which you tell me your name, your matriculation number and your semester. If there are less that ten of you, I will register all of you to the course and you are good to go. If there are more than ten students interested, a slight preference will go to the students with a higher semester count (this does not mean that you will be guaranteed a spot if you are a higher semester). Now, if you are merely curious about the course, please do not send me that email. Only sign up, if you are actually planning on for sure taking the course. It would be a shame if someone gets a spot and then goes to the lecture once and decides it is not interesting enough while someone really interested does not get that chance at all.

Finally, after the immense disappointment at the lack of the good luck dance last semester, I will make no outlandish claims towards helping you wish you good luck for the upcoming exams. Also, the only real video I could find on google regarding a good luck dance was a K-Pop song which I cannot condone in any way and the spreading of which I do not want to have on my conscience. Either there is not a large enough demand for good luck dances or the supply is not given. I will leave all of you aspiring economists to figure that one out.

(To all of the first semesters to whom this paragraph made absolutely no sense: either simply ignore it, or, if you are really curious, look at the newsletter from 14.02.2019)

Good luck on your exams and have a great summer break afterwards.

Sincerely,

Christoph Wirp
