MIEPP Seminars SuSe 2023

Von: FB 03 - Studienbüro

Dear MIEPP students,

I am pleased to share the seminar offers for the summer semester 2023 in this newsletter.

You will find the list of seminars, incl. seminar descriptions, attached to this e-mail.

We have once again the usual wide range of MIEPP seminars - three seminars in International Economics, two seminars in Public Policy, and one seminar in Statistics and Econometrics. In addition, this is the first semester were remaining seats from two project seminars from the Master's in Quantitative Decision Making in Economics and Management (QDEM) will be available for MIEPP students. One is a seminar by Prof. Schank in the field of Econometrics. This seminar is allocated to the "Statistics and Econometrics" domain in the MIEPP. If you are among the higher semester students, this seminar can be counted as a seminar in both specializations (Int. Economics and Public Policy). If you are among the students who started in summer term 2022 or thereafter: This seminar counts as a seminar in the area of economics. The second project seminar is offered by Prof. Hett in the field of Economic Behavior and Strategy. This seminar is counted as a seminar in the Public Policy domain for students in higher semesters and as a seminar in the area of economics for students in lower semesters. The mentioned project seminars are first open for students from Master QDEM. However, remaining places will be allocated to you as MIEPP students. So if you are interested in one of these seminars, feel free to register.

For those of you not familiar with the process of choosing a seminar (others can skip to the timeline below), the registration for seminars is not done via Jogustine but by e-mail (you also do not have to do anything in Jogustine after sending the registration e-mail).

To register for a seminar, please write an email to me (MIEPP AT uni-mainz.de) including your name, matriculation number, specialization, and a ranking of all of the available seminars, including the instructors name, according to your preferences (highest preference 1, lowest preference 8). I will then place you into the seminars while keeping your preferences and specializations in mind as much as possible. If, due to your specialization, you have to take a seminar in a certain area (i.e., you are an International Economics student and already have taken a Public Policy seminar), please also mention that in your email. In the same way, if you want to take two seminars in the summer term 2023, please include this information as well.

If you have started your studies in the summer term 2022 or later:

Please do not be confused by the mentioned “specialization”. Higher semester students had to choose a “specialization”, International Economics or Public Policy, when they started their studies. You did not need to do this because your examination regulations slightly differ from the ones of higher semester students.

You basically do the same as the students from higher semesters for the registration: To register for a seminar, please write an email to me (MIEPP AT uni-mainz.de) including your name, matriculation number, and a ranking of all of the available seminars according to your preferences (highest preference 1, lowest preference 8).

Some useful remarks, you should keep in mind when registering (for all students):

·         If you only rank one or two seminars, I will simply assume that all the other seminars are of equal utility to you below the ranked ones. Choice 3 is still high on the list so you might be placed anywhere. If you only rank a small number of seminars it will in no way guarantee that you receive one of these seminars.

·         If you want to write your Master’s thesis at a particular chair, you can mention it in your registration e-mail, but it will not guarantee you a spot in the seminar of that chair.

·         This is not a first come, first served procedure. I will look at all the preferences at the end of the registration period and try to get everyone situated as well as possible.

·         For students who started in the winter term 2021/22 or earlier: Simply because you have a certain specialization, does not mean that you have to take both seminars in this area. In fact, it is very likely that one of the two seminars is not in your specialization area.

Timeline:

Registration will start today , 09.03.2023 and will end on 28.03.2023, 23:59. This should give all of you enough time to tell me your preferences.

Should you have any questions about the seminar registration, feel free to reach out.

Sincerely,

Daniela Maier
