Core module exam information and jobs

Von: FB 03 - Studienbüro <studienbuero-fb03 AT uni-mainz.de>

Dear MIEPP students,

I hope this e-mail finds you well and that you are already looking forward to enjoying the Christmas season and start of Christmas markets.
Today, I have a dry but important topic – exam structure of the core modules – and some jobs for you.

As many of you are doing core modules this semester, I wanted to give you an overview about the exam structure. The exam structure depends on the examination regulations that apply to you, which in turn depend on when you started your studies. So please make sure to look at the paragraph which applies to you. For all students with start of studies up to and incl. winter term 2021/22: There are quite some changes in the exam structure compared to previous semesters. Please make sure to fully grasp them. Should there be any questions, please do not hesitate to reach out.

Students with start of studies in the summer term 2022 or later (Examination regulations 2022):
For the Studies & Research in Economics exam on 22.12.2022, you are able to register from 24.11.2022, 12:00 to 15.12.2023, 23:59. Please make sure to register during this period if you want to go for the exam in December. Late registrations cannot be accepted. If you want to attend the second exam date, 30.03.2023, you can register during the centralized exam registration period, 09.01.23 – 23.01.23. For the Introductory Econometrics exam, you also register during the centralized exam registration period.

For the other core modules, Int. Trade, Development & Growth, Principles of Public Economics, and Advanced Macro, you have one 60 minutes written exam per module. You can register for these exams during the centralized exam registration period, 09.01.23 – 23.01.23.

That's all you need to know, you can now skip to the job offer part.

Students with start of studies up to and incl. winter term 2021/22 (Examination regulations 2018):
For the Lecture Series in Economics, you are not expected to participate in an exam. If you attended the course, the Study office will be informed by the lecturer and we will note that you have met the participation requirements for this course.
For the Introductory Econometrics exam, you register during the centralized exam registration period, 09.01.23 – 23.01.23.

Now comes the tricky part – Core module International Economics and Core module Public Policy:

Core module - International Economics
The core module International Economics covers content from the International Trade and the Development & Growth lectures + tutorials. The module exam consists of a 120 minutes written exam.
Now comes the novelty for this semester: The International Economics core module is still one 12 CP module with one module exam but the module exam parts are held on two different days. This means in order to complete the International Economics core module exam, you have to register for the Int. Trade part and the Development and Growth part.

For this, you can choose between the first and the second examination date. This means you have these two options:
Int. Trade, 17.02.2023, and Development and Growth, 24.02.2023 or
Int. Trade, 17.03.2023, and Development and Growth, 28.03.2023

Core module - Public Policy
The core module Public Policy covers content from the Principles of Public Economics and the Advanced Macroeconomics lectures + tutorials. The module exam consists of a 120 minutes written exam.
The novelty for this semester (as for the Int. Econ. exam): The module is still one 12 CP module with one module exam but the module exam parts are held on two different days. This means in order to complete the Public Policy core module exam, you have to register for the Principles of Public Economics and the Advanced Macroeconomics part.

For this you can choose between the first and the second examination date. This means you have these two options:
Principles of Public Economics, 22.02.2023, and Advanced Macroeconomics, 15.02.2023 or
Principles of Public Economics, 15.03.2023 , and Advanced Macroeconomics, 21.03.2023

What counts for both Core module exams, International Economics and Public Policy:
You have to complete both parts of the module exam to complete the module exam. If you attend one part of the module exam and you are absent (with or without valid excuse) at the other part, you have to repeat the whole module exam (i.e. both parts must be repeated).
As in previous semesters, you will only get one grade for the core module exam which is calculated by summing up the points from both parts of the module exam. If the sum of the achieved points is below the pass mark, the exam, i.e. both parts of the exam, have to be repeated.
