Solidarity with Ukraine

Von: FB 03 - Studienbüro <studienbuero-fb03 AT uni-mainz.de>

Dear MIEPP students,

Today’s newsletter is about a serious but important topic: the war in Ukraine. Some of you may have already read the statement by the President of JGU that was sent out last week.

Prof. Harms, Prof. Schunk and Prof. Lassmann would also like to comment on the recent happenings. I am forwarding their message to you below.

Dear MIEPP students,

We are all shocked, saddened and enraged by Russia’s ruthless assault on Ukraine, and our thoughts are with the country’s population, which is exposed to extreme violence and hardship.

We can imagine that Ukrainian students in Mainz find themselves in a desperate situation, and we therefore want to make you aware of an infrastructure that has been set up by the JGU administration to support students in both practical and psychological matters. (Below, we are attaching the original German e-mail that was sent out by the JGU administration on Friday.) Students in need of support can contact the following e-mail address: kontakt AT international.uni-mainz.de. Moreover, there is a website which lists further contacts offering assistance: https://www.international.uni-mainz.de/hilfe-ukraine/  (All information on this website is in German. However, we are confident that people will react if you approach them in English.)

Despite our outrage about Russia’s invasion, we should be aware that the attack on its neighbor is not in the interest of the Russian people, but has been initiated by an increasingly oppressive regime. Moreover, these days full of worries and exasperation should remind us of what the MIEPP stands for: a world where people from different countries and backgrounds meet each other with curiosity, sympathy and respect, and in which diversity is a key ingredient of a positive and productive learning process.

We are confident that these ideals will stand up to the reality we are currently confronted with, and we trust that you subscribe to them as much as we do.

Best regards,

Prof. Dr. Philipp Harms

Prof. Dr. Andrea Laßmann

Prof. Dr. Daniel Schunk

Daniela Maier
