Welcome Words and Course Information, MIEPP Teams-Up, Stata Course, etc.
Von: FB 03 - Studienbüro
Dear MIEPP Students,
Sadly, another digital semester is upon us and I am well aware that this phrase is becoming somewhat repetitive. Nonetheless, I hope that you are all healthy and ready to start another semester.
For the start of the semester, I have a somewhat longer for you to get into the spirit of things, so to say:
- Welcome Words
- Virtual Student Meet up
- Stata Course
- Problems registering for modules
- Master Topic
As you probably know, the official start of lectures in the summer semester 2021 is April 19, 2021. However, in order to help a bit with the course selection and to get into the spirit of the semester starting you will find a list of links at the very end of this message, that provide information on courses offered in the summer semester 2021 and beyond. Moreover, the first two links present the two MIEPP specialization areas International Economics and Public Policy. We encourage you to use this information in order to select your lectures for this semester. If no link is given for a course you are interested in, we encourage you to check out the respective faculty member’s website or contact her/him directly.
As far as seminars (“research modules”) are concerned, faculty members will directly get in touch with you.
We also invite you to join the traditional “Welcome Words” event, which will take place as MS Teams meeting on April 12, 2021 at 11:00 am. While the main goal of this event is to welcome new students, it will also be nice to see each other again – at least virtually.
The link to join the Teams meeting use the following link:
Another tradition we neither want to give up nor miss is the mingling of new and old MIEPP students at the evening of the first day of the semester. Therefore, the Student Representatives have organized a MIEPP Teams-Up event which will take place on Monday, April 12 starting at 7:00 pm. You can join the meeting and welcome the new students as well as reconnect with friends (as well as it is possible right now) using the following link:
As in the last summer semesters, there will be a voluntary Stata course. Not only is it useful to understand the basics of Stata if you are interested in statistics and econometrics but as Stata is used in much of the applied work in all fields of economics, a baseline of Stata knowledge will always have a payoff. More information can be found below:
You can reach the course via the link below:
Some of you had some problems regarding course registration in the last week. Most problems were stemming from the fact that in the MIEPP everyone can only take 8 elective modules, 4 of which have to be in the specialization. Now, whoever registered for more courses than he/she took exams in, the spots of the total 8 modules were already filled up and you could no longer register. For many, this problem was solved but if it did not work for you yet, please git it another try next week.
As the MIEPP has no modules that restrict the number of students, you are not in any disadvantage. Also keep in mind that if you do not manage to register for courses within the course registration period, this is not the exam registration. I can still register you to courses after the end of the registration period without a problem so you will all be able to take the classes you need.
Finally, the chair of Prof. van Ewijk is looking for someone to write a master thesis on “Determinants of Ramadan Fasting during Pregnancy in Germany”. More information is attached to this email.
Now that this newsletter is finally drawing to an end, I want to welcome all of you back to the JGU in Mainz and I hope we can once again make the best out of a bad situation and hopefully things get better soon. Have a great semester and try to enjoy your time here as best as possible.
Sincerely,
Christoph Wirp
