Seminars and Political Science Course

Von: FB 03 - Studienbüro

Dear MIEPP Students:

It has been an outrageously long time since you have last heard from me (and some of you probably forgot completely I existed at all) so finally, the silence is broken and with it come the seminar announcements for the next semester. I will also give some quick information on the Political Science Course: Policy Making in the European Union.

Seminars:

First and foremost, Seminars. Some of you probably though this moment was never going to come, that the seminars had somehow be lost and forgotten or burned away by the heat and would not be offered this semester. Fear not! The day of revelation has come.

As most of you probably know, I usually try to have the seminars announced before the exams are over (or have even started in the best case). Alas, due to some complications with the seminar offering this winter, it took a bit longer to collect all of the relevant information. I am aware that this semester a lot of you might not be expecting the seminar announcement right now, so I will adjust the registration period to give everyone more time to notice that the seminars are finally revealed.

For those of you not familiar with the process (others can skip to the timeline below), the registration for seminars is not done via Jogustine but by email (you also do not have to do anything in Jogustine after sending the email). In order to register for a seminar, please write an email to me (MIEPP AT uni-mainz.de) including your name, matriculation number, specialization and a ranking of all of the available seminars, including the instructors name, according to your preferences (highest preference 1, lowest preference 6). I will then place you into the seminars while keeping your preferences and specializations in mind as much as possible. If, due to your specialization, you have to take a seminar in a certain area (i.e. you are in international economics student and already have taken a public policy seminar), please also mention that in your email. In the same way, if you want to take two seminars, please include this information as well.

Now, some useful pointers:

-          If you only rank one or two seminars, I will simply assume that all the other seminars are of equal utility to you below the ranked ones. It will in no way guarantee that you receive one of the seminars listed.

-          If you want to write your master thesis at a chair, you can mention it in the email to me but it will also not guarantee you a spot in the seminar.

-          This is not a first come, first serve procedure, I will look at all the preferences at the end of the time period and try to get everyone situated as well as possible.

-          Simply because you have a certain specialization, does not mean that you have to take both seminars in this area. In fact, it is very likely that one of the two seminars is not in your specialization area.

Registration will start today, August 9 and end Sunday, September 16. This is quite a long timeframe but as I said above, I am aware that some of you might be on vacation and might not have access to your email regularly. I will also try to remind you at least once before the deadline to register. Hopefully, I can give out the allocation before October so that all of you can plan your next semester accordingly.

As always, I have attached a document with all of the relevant seminar information to this email.

Political Science Course:

Secondly, the course Policy Making in the European Union (a political science course that can be found in Jogustine) is open for MIEPP students. Yet there are only ten spots available for you guys, so you cannot sign up for the course on your own. If you want to take the course, please also send me a (separate) email by September 16 in which you tell me your name, your matriculation number and your semester.

If there are less that ten of you, I will register all of you to the course and you are good to go. If there are more than ten students interested, a slight preference will go to the students with a higher semester count (this does not mean that you will be guaranteed a spot if you are a higher semester). Now, if you are merely curious about the course, please do not send me that email. Only sign up, if you are actually planning on for sure taking the course. It would be a shame if someone gets a spot and then goes to the lecture once and decides it is not interesting enough while someone really interested does not get that chance at all.

That is all from me for now, I hope you are enjoying your semester break very much and you have not melted with the temperatures we have had thus far. Enjoy the rest of your summer and do not think too much about the upcoming semester (other than the seminar of course).

Sincerely,

Christoph Wirp
